WASHINGTON — Nancy Pelosi demanded a new vote on gun legislation late Tuesday night, rejecting a previous deal that would have extended the ban on assault weapons and bump stocks to a roughly six-year period.
Hours after a gunman opened fire at a congressional baseball practice, killing House Majority Whip Steve Scalise and three other people, including a staffer, Pelosi phoned Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and said she wanted an immediate vote on the gun legislation.
If the Senate follows the House, the bill would fail, clearing the way for a less sweeping measure in the Senate that includes other measures.
“We have a good plan,” Pelosi told reporters after the call with Schumer. “I’m sorry that they had a previous agreement, but it’s just that.”

Pelosi (D-Calif.) went on to tell reporters that she did not believe the Senate bill included enough provisions to address the problem of gun violence in America, but she was not ready to accept less.
“It does not seem to be there. We do not think that we can accept that. We don’t think we can get to yes on a gun bill,” she said, adding that she would work to find a compromise with Schumer. “We have a good plan.”
Schumer told reporters earlier Tuesday that he did not know if the two chambers would reach an agreement, but the New York Democrat said the votes in the Senate are “very solid.”
On Tuesday night, Pelosi and Schumer were on a conference call with President Trump. The White House said the president “supported the House leadership position and was glad that there was a bipartisan vote to strengthen background checks for gun sales.”
Pelosi also said the House’s top Republican, Kevin McCarthy, has “been in touch with us,” but Democrats were mum on what type of deal would be reached.
